Midnight sun

The midnight sun or in other words white nights is another peculiar phenomenon of night. Actually, it is phenomenon when darkness never falls. The white nights are not the darkness but the gloaming. There is no way for one to see the darkness during white nights. This is the most interesting and romantic phenomenon of night.

This phenomenon occurs in those areas that are close to polar circles. It is a common phenomenon for those periods that are peculiar for solstice. As for the Northern hemisphere it is a period of summer solstice and as for the Southern hemisphere it is a period of winter solstice. In all other times there is no way for phenomenon of white nights to occur.

From the scientific point of view there is no common definition for the phenomenon of white nights or midnight summer. According to one point of view the midnight sun is a phenomenon common for those areas the latitude of which is no less than 60 degree. But there are also those scientists who state that this phenomenon is also common for other areas with lower latitude.

As for the duration of the midnight sun there is also no one strict definition for all areas. There are such areas the midnights at which last for two or three weeks. And there are such areas the midnights of which last for a month at least. The duration of midnight sun depends on the latitude of area.
